There are lots of ways in which a model can tell a story or make a meaning about its subject. An architectural model can be interpreted differently depending on the techniques, processes, and materials used to make it. For instance, white acrylic and timber models are very useful for creating contrast, combining different shades of wood can also highlight features in the design. “Choosing the right material is particularly important on small scale proposal models, where space is a premium, or on abstract competition models, where design features and ideas can be communicated in unconventional ways. A combination of white acrylic and timber model creates contrast, or we can combine different shades of wood to highlight features in the design”.

Architectural models are used to communicate many different ideas. “Architecture can convey historical ideas, ideas about craft, personal tastes, an attitude toward light and dark, the forest canopy, a city skyline. This seed of an idea can become the design engine for the project”. There are also lots of connotations that may be conveyed by the materials used to make models. For example, organic materials such as stone and wood are used to link the architecture with the natural environment and geology around that’s surrounds it. When referencing to stone, “The material links the architecture to the indigenous geology not only in tone and texture but also because local trades people were employed to craft its assembly.

For my next project I will be making an architectural model of the Arts University Bournemouth drawing studio. I will be using organic techniques and processes such as hammering copper plates into shape for the roof of the building and using aluminium wire to make the trees. The reason for this is to try and link the architecture to the natural environment surrounding it. The building is also a very open structure and has free flowing style to it, the large circular windows on the roof enable natural light to come through, inspiring creativity.
