Progress report 2

This week I started sculpting Super Sculpey onto both armatures to give the miniatures character, definition, detail, and realism. When doing this I had to keep in mind the scale and proportions of the figures whilst staying accurate the drawings of both artists. The 1ml syringes that I ordered have also arrived, so I have started arranging them into the glass container.

I found that due to the size of the models, I had to use lots of different fine and pointed sculpting tools more often than not to achieve the right level of detail. I found this challenging as I have not sculpted to this scale before, I have only sculpted larger sized heads and maquettes in the past.

One of the new techniques I learnt which I found useful was the to heat and harden the base layer of Super Sculpey with a hair dryer before adding another layer on top. This allowed me to focus on one layer at a time. Davis Neat also mentions in his blog that “Super Sculpey can be easily modelled up in layers, heated in between.”

Other than the general struggle to stay at the correct scale, keep proportions, and produce highly detailed models, there were no major problems that occurred.

The main goal for next week is to refine and finalize the sculpts so they are ready to heat and harden before being painted with acrylic to finish.
