The Value of Modelmaking

remicatchpole

Models are utilized in a wide range of sectors from full size car models to miniscule architectural models. They are useful for various reasons such as developing ideas at each stage of the design process. For years models have been used to develop and present ideas but now that digital modelling is so readily available why do people still place value in physical models?

Architectural models are used throughout the design process from the initial sketch model to the final presentation model. They have lots of different uses. For instance, they turn the architects 2D drawing into 3D format which can help identify any issues within the design and express how the building might look in 3D. As Nick Dunn explains in the introduction to his book Architectural Modelmaking Models can be extraordinarily versatile objects within this process, enabling designers to express thoughts creatively. Architects make models as a means of exploring and presenting the conception and development of ideas in three dimensions”.

Models can also be used for iteration and ergonomic testing for example wind tunnel testing to assess the aerodynamics of a car or a motorbike. They can also be used as high-tech working prototypes, meaning the modelmaker would have the combined skill of an engineer, a carpenter, and a sculptor. Physical models are particularly valuable in this context as this kind of testing would not be possible in a digital setting.

He mentions that “Like sketches they are open ended, they suggest a multiplicity of solutions not just one solution whereas the finished rendered computer models only suggest one singular solution”. A physical representation model can also demonstrate different finishes and materials in a building and how these interact with light and space. Having a tangible object in front of them allows the viewer to engage in the experience of the building in a physical space which is not so easily done with computer models.
